At a glance
Stage 7 is a gentler day: about 17 km and 4h 46min from Aljezur to the cliffs of Arrifana, rated Moderate. It leaves the town inland, crosses farmland and low hills, and reaches the coast near Arrifana, a surfing hotspot with a spectacular beach framed by black rocks and dramatic Atlantic views. It is a good day to recover after the long stage 6 and to enjoy the village at the end.
What to expect on this stage
Stage 7 starts with a steep climb out of Aljezur onto the hills behind the town, rewarded by sweeping views of the Aljezur valley, the sea and the road below. A section follows beside a main road, which can be unpleasant in a north-westerly wind, before the path returns to sandy trails with succulent flowers above the Aljezur river mouth. The trail then reaches Monte Clérigo, whose beach restaurant is seasonal (it may be closed outside summer), so carry a snack. The first half is mostly inland, on quiet tracks and lanes between farms and low hills, with little shade and few services. The trail is easy to follow and mostly firm underfoot, with gentle ups and downs. As you approach the coast the landscape opens and the ocean appears, then the path follows the clifftops to Arrifana. The finish is dramatic: the black cliffs, the surfers on the beach below and the ruined fortress on the headland. With a shorter distance than the previous days, there is time to explore Arrifana, watch the sunset and rest.
